About the City of Rome, Italy

Rome, the “Eternal City,” brims with ancient history, from the Colosseum to the port of Ostia Antica to majestic Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel. Because of its history, art, architecture, and beauty – and perhaps its gelato and pasta! – Rome is one of our most popular cities. Best Cities annually ranks the top 100 cities to live, work and invest in. While Rome came seventh overall, it also came third in both place and programming, two separate rankings. Read on below to learn why Rome was ranked as one of the top 10 cities in the world, according to Best Cities

Today, it is a cosmopolitan metropolis which is home to both ancient ruins and a vibrant contemporary culture. With art galleries, trendy bars and shops selling the latest fashions, modern Rome shows that the city is much more than its past.

Ancient Romans pioneered advances in many areas of science and technology, establishing tools and methods that have ultimately shaped the way the world does certain things. The Romans were extremely adept engineers. They understood the laws of physics well enough to develop aqueducts and better ways to aid water flow.

First settled in the seventh century B.C., Constantinople developed into a thriving port thanks to its prime geographic location between Europe and Asia and its natural harbor. In A.D. 330, it became the site of Roman Emperor Constantine’s “New Rome,” a Christian city of immense wealth and magnificent architecture.
